In the City by the Sea Kamila Shamsie’s debut novel is now the same age as her first protagonist, year-old Hasan, the only child of a lauded. Editorial Reviews. Review. ‘Lively, playful, provocative’ Anita Desai ‘A touching and engrossing In the City by the Sea – Kindle edition by Kamila Shamsie. Kamila Shamsie’s debut novel In the City by the Sea published in and eloquent, charming and quietly political novel is set in an unnamed city in Pakistan.
The story of In The Vity By The Sea revolves around eleven years old Hasanwho is living in a country which is under the dictatorial military rule.
One early summer morning, while lazing happily on the roof, Hasan watches a young boy flying a yellow kite fall to his death. Hasan wants to rescue his uncle and is willing to go any length for that yet he also understands his incapacity to actually put any of his plans into action. Thee problem is that while reading, both the events jump back and forth, which may leave a reader confused and frustrated at times.
I for one wanted to give up on the book in between. But as soon as I turned the page, something meaningful would come up that would make me stick to it. Maybe Kamila wanted to show how bravely Hasan can suppress his feeling of being a sae to such tragic event?
Initially, an impression is given that Hasan is an imaginative boy, which many year-old kids are. But then, he also has the talent to shut off his imaginary world and speak to adults in their language and poise.
The contrast between his childlike imagination and mature conversations makes it hard to place Hasan down into his age group.
I enjoyed the book through a magical and deep meaning perspective, but I was annoyed as well when there was no plot and unfinished things in the story.

This one-page guide includes a plot summary and brief analysis of The Ghost Sonata by August Strindberg. The Ghost Sonata () by seminal Swedish. The Ghost Sonata (Swedish title: Spöksonaten) was written in and first performed the January 21st, at Strindberg’s Intimate Theater in Stockholm. For his final Strindberg staging, Bergman returns to The Ghost Sonata for the fourth time and the result is ‘more a farewell tale than an unmasking’.
Bergman presented Old Man Hummel as the mastermind in a web of crimes and lies. His hands covered in bloody rags, perhaps a reference to the murder he once committed and possibly also to Strindberg himself, who suffered from psoriasis while writing the play. There were other biographical allusions in the production: Musically, the play has usually been associated with Beethoven’s ‘Gespenstersonal’ but Bergman used Bela Bartok as musical accompaniment, though his fourth reading of Strindberg’s play stridnberg the dark mood of Beethoven’s piece.
Almost all of the reviews were struck by the mercilessness and morbidity of Bergman’s fourth The Ghost Sonata, referring to it as a depressing existentialist Strindberg compendium; a Judgment Day drama.
A synopsis of a whole Swedish tradition but painted in a dark vision of sulphur and vitriolic’. Swedish reviewers have tended to keep Bergman’s theatre productions separate from his filmmaking.
All enter with their backs to snata audience, as if they had just strindbery and the director in the editing room had said “Stop! Yet even as you flinch, you are unlikely to look away. How could you, when the images are so sensuous and stark sonara the same time, so lush and still so disciplined in their composition?
Seldom has cosmic disgust filled a stage so ravishingly. At 82, he is dazzlingly confident in his command of the artifice and exaggerations required to render this singular work’s grotesque comedy and steady undercurrent of pain.
To put it more bluntly, he is a consummate showman who, dealing with uncomfortable and abstruse material, knows how to hook us and keep us hooked. The play is divided into three scenes, or movements, that progress from exterior to interior, literally and otherwise. The first, set in the street, introduces the Student to the conniving Old Man and his world of lost snoata, living and dead.
The third finds the Student paying court to the daughter of the house Elin Klingaa rite compellingly staged here as a Bergmanesque wrestling match of the sexes.
Everyone has his or her strlndberg secret. And what seems glamorous from a distance is in close-up obscene. The elegant Dark Lady Gerthi Kulle lifts her veil to reveal an immense pustulant growth on her left cheek; her suitor, the Posh Man Anders Beckmandangles what looks like a loose vein from his mouth.
Then there is the Mummy, with her inflamed scalp and shrouds of lace, who moves and talks like a parrot.
Standing in eternal reproach is a nude statue of the Mummy as a young woman. Like most other figures in the play, it will be stained with blood before the evening ends. To tell the strindbegg, as an assembly of tic-riddled, hollow poseurs and desiccated beauties, The Ghost Supper isn’t so different from some Park Avenue dinner parties I’ve attended.
And the manipulative Old Man evokes any number of contemporary powermongers.
The Ghost Sonata |
It is Strindberg’s contention, after all, strinddberg hell is nothing more than life on earth. And despite the period costumes the stunning work of Anna Bergman and the dialogue spoken in Swedish there is, srrindberg usual, simultaneous translation through headsetsthe self-devouring world conjured here can seem mighty close to that of Tom Wolfe’s Bonfire of the Vanities, as read on a rainy day with a hangover.
All aspects of the physical production combine to create an environment that is both otherworldly and entirely too worldly. The palette shifts from osnata urban blacks and grays of the street to the jewel tones of the interior of the Colonel’s house. Pierre Leveau’s wonderful lighting appears to translate surfaces into everything from grit to velvet.
The Ghost Sonata
Every detail counts heavily and often insinuates its way into your subconscious: There are moments when you may not trust your senses, as when the breathtakingly beautiful Ms Klinga first opens her eyes to reveal — can it be? She looks, in fact, like the marble statue of her character’s mother. This Young Lady is deeply contaminated in ways the Student may not see at first, but that we certainly do.
In the play’s first 15 minutes or so, just after he has encountered the Old Man, he keeps saying he has to leave, and there strrindberg moments when you think — and half hope — that he might really escape.
Strindberg’s house of horrors is, to borrow from Henry James, ”no evil dream of a night’. It is a reality from which no one awakes, at least in this world. Of course Strindberg isn’t going to let the Student walk out. Through pure artistry, Mr Strlndberg exerts a similar hold on those watching these souls in captivity. The Ghost Sonata was awarded the first annual Scandinavian Theatre Prize, a prize instituted to honour the best stage production of a Scandinavian play, put on by one of the three Scandinavian national stages.
One of the remaining wrote about the connection between the parasitical theme of Strindberg’s play and the rationale behind the Attac movements struggle against global capitalism. Bergman was considered a director ‘who unites, without much ado and with no self-adulation, his life-long experiences in the theatre and his self-evident genius.
And the actors will follow him like angels in both farce and tragedy’. And in the zap of an evening, we are stunned yet again with the power of a permanent acting ghsot, with the importance of marrow-deep understanding of style and master to transform theory and text into living, breathing, sweating stage genius’.
Another critic compared the quality of Bergman’s performance with the ordinary New York performances and was ‘as ashamed of New York today as Hummel’s victims are sknata their guilty secrets. The city’s theatre, like the living-dead household where Arkenholz find himself, is poisoned at the very source of life’.
For his final Strindberg staging, Bergman returns to The Ghost Ghosr for the fourth time and the result is ‘more a farewell tale than an unmasking’. Evangelos Kofos –
Byhowever, the picture had changed drastically. It is true however, that many academics did offer their contributions to a sober and scholarly analysis of the issues at hand. Others, however, chose to join the bandwagon of nationalist fundamentalism. In this respect, it is worth reviewing briefly their views. Given the utter confusion reigning in Western media at the time of the Yugoslav disintegration, it was no surprise that certain commentators chose to interpret the slogan and the huge public demonstrations that followed in Thessalonica and other Greek cities, as a nationalist Greek move seeking to profit from the chaotic situation in the north in order to advance territorial claims on the neighbouring former Yugoslav republic.
Certainly, observers with even rudimentary knowledge of Greek and Balkan history and politics could easily detect the misunderstanding over terms. Nevertheless, as the slogan became the battle cry of the Greeks demonstrating all over the world against the recognition of the new state bearing the name of Macedonia, the government in Skopje and its supporters abroad chose to make propaganda capital of an inaccurate slogan to discredit the Greek motives in opposing recognition of FYROM 6.
The debate over that slogan sheds some further light into the gradual formulation of Greek positions during the critical period of — Indeed, those who took the initiative in coining the slogan on the eve of the huge, one million-strong demonstration in Thessalonica, in Februarycould hardly understand that the outside world was more familiar with the Macedonian state of the FSR of Yugoslavia than with the ancient Macedonian kingdom and its boundaries of 24 centuries ago.
By utilizing that slogan, they had two things in mind: It should be noted eavngelos such yearnings were gaining quickly in popularity and becoming vocal in Skopje for the first time since the s. They found an eager echo in the Slav Macedonian diaspora.
It was in this context that the demonstrating Greeks sought to make it clear, urbi et orbi, that Macedonia i. The inference was clear.
Since no other region in the Balkans apart from the Greek province of Macedonia could be associated evangwlos identified with the ancient kingdom of Macedonia, it would be historically preposterous for a Slavic country to assume the Macedonian name as the official designation of a new independent state entity. Carrying this argument further, no other people apart from the Greeks were entitled to use the Macedonian name either as a cultural-ethnic or a geographic-regional appellation 8.
The first victim of this mobilization was the traditional post-war Greek policy regarding Macedonism. One should bear in mind that Greek reaction over these issues a response to nationalist manifestations across the border in the SRM through —, i.

Unimpeded by the organs of a tight security state, similar leaflets and graffiti covered walls in various towns of the Republic. Going intopublic statements and irredentist literature, such as calendars, tourist mementos, car stickers, and maps portraying a united Macedonia fanned the flames of nationalism In Greece, despite such irritants, official policy did not change overnight.
Throughoutthe New Democracy government headed by Prime Minister Constantine Mitsotakis, with Andonis Samaras as Foreign Minister, pursued the traditional Greek line on Yugoslavia, while coordinating its efforts with the United States and the majority of European Community member countries to ensure the survival of the Yugoslav federation or of a new federal version, minus Slovenia and possibly Croatia.
When, however, the process of dissolution of the old structures in Yugoslavia appeared irreversible, Athens shifted its attention to securing international guarantees against changes to the kofks borders of the Balkan countries. Sensing that most EC countries were either ignorant of, or evangslos to the intricacies of Balkan issues, with the notable exception of Germany and Italy, the Lofos Government turned to Belgrade and Sofia in search of a common approach to the emerging problems in the southern part of the Balkans.
They found no consensus of views in the two capitals, however The Bulgarians accepted developments in Yugoslavia as an unexpected bonanza. Their traditional opponent in the Balkans, the Serbs, had been caught in a whirlpool of their own making which, one way or the other, was bound to wreck their hitherto dominant geopolitical position in the region.
Under the circumstances, they were in no mood to accommodate Belgrade—or, for that matter, the Greeks—in sustaining a structure that would perpetuate Serbian hegemony, even in an indirect way, over the region. On the other hand, the international community, particularly the EC was expected to be receptive to Greek sensitivities and interests.
Greek assessments and expectations proved wrong on all three counts. Bulgaria was, indeed, too weak to interfere.
